John Sherman (1823-1900), was a U.S. Congressman, 1855-61, a U.S. Senator, 1861-77 and again 1881-97, as well as the Secretary of the Treasury under President Hayes, 1877-81, and the Secretary of the State under President McKinley, 1897-98.  John Sherman was the younger brother of Union General William Tecumseh Sherman of Civil War fame.  John Sherman is noted for having introduced the Sherman Anti-Trust Act, 1879, in an effort to curb the monopolies of big businesses.  He stated:
